HEAVY SNOW WARNING FOR SOUTHLAND AND OTAGO EXTENDED TO CANTERBURY Very
cold southerlies should spread over the South Island today, bringing
snow showers to sea level in the far south this morning and in
Canterbury tonight.There may be accumulations of up to 15cm down to 200
metres in the hills of Fiordland, Southland, South Otago and about the
Otago Peninsula with heaviest falls during the morning to early
afternoon. After that, lighter snow showers may continue through to
Tuesday morning.
The cold southerly change should reach Christchurch late afternoon.
Snow should lower to sea-level overnight and with heavy falls possible
from the coast in to the foothills.
People in all these areas are advised to watch for hazardous travelling
conditions and to stay up to date with the latest forecasts.

HILLS,CANTERBURY FROM COAST TO FOOTHILLS, KAIKOURA COAST.
FORECAST:
SOUTHLAND, FIORDLAND, SOUTH OTAGO AND THE DUNEDIN HILLS Very cold
southwesterlies are developing this morning bringing showers, with snow
or sleet reaching sea level. Above about 200 metres snow may accumulate
to 10 to 15cm in some places in a 6 to 9 hour period from about 8am in
Fiordland and Southland and 10am in Otago. Lighter falls are expected
after that until Tuesday morning.
CANTERBURY FROM COAST TO FOOTHILLS
A cold southerly change late this afternoon should see rain turning to
snow down to sea-level in Canterbury overnight. In a 6 to 9 hours period
from about 7pm,10 to 15 cm may accumulate down to sea-level.
Heaviest falls are likely to be about Banks Peninsula. After that,any
remaining snow showers should become lighter and then clear away during
Tuesday morning.
KAIKOURA COAST
Cold southerlies should spread north overnight with snow lowering to
near sea-level. Around 10cm of snow may accumulate above 100 metres in a
6 hour period from about 11pm tonight.
